When it starts to matter
The risk arrives with climbing, which is earlier than most people plan for. A child who can pull to standing on a drawer front can open it and use it as a step.
That is the point to anchor, not when they can walk.
What actually tips
Tall, light furniture with drawers is the classic hazard: chests of drawers, bookcases and anything a television sits on. Weight low down helps but does not solve it.
A loaded top drawer moves the centre of gravity forward considerably.
Drilling versus adhesive straps
Screwed anchors into a stud are the strongest option. Adhesive strap systems exist for rentals and for anyone who will otherwise never do it at all.
A well-fitted adhesive strap used correctly is far better than a perfect screw fixing that never gets installed.
Surface preparation is the whole job
Adhesive systems fail because of dust and polish, not because of the adhesive. Clean both surfaces properly, press firmly, and leave them to cure before testing.
Skipping the cure time is the most common reason a strap lets go later.
Check the wall, not just the furniture
Plasterboard without a fixing behind it will pull out under load. Find the timber, or use a fixing rated for the board.
This is the part where taking five extra minutes changes the outcome entirely.
Do the whole room
Anchoring one unit and leaving the bookcase beside it is a common half-measure. Children explore the room, not the item.
Straps come in multipacks because rooms have more than one candidate.
Re-check after moving anything
Straps loosen when furniture is pulled out to clean behind. Add it to the list whenever the room is rearranged.
A quick tug test twice a year is enough.
