Fragrance-free baby wash: what the label is actually telling you
Baby skincare is a crowded shelf with a small number of decisions in it. Fragrance is the one that matters most.
Fragrance-free versus unscented
Fragrance-free means no fragrance has been added. Unscented can mean a masking scent has been added to cover the smell of the base. They are not the same claim.
If skin is reacting, fragrance-free is the one to look for.
Why we shelve fragrance-free first
Fragrance is the most common cause of irritation in wash products, and babies do not need to smell of anything. Where a product exists in both versions, we stock the plain one.
It is a simple rule and it removes most of the guesswork from the aisle.
Wash frequency
Daily bathing is not necessary for most babies, and over-washing strips the skin. Warm water alone is enough on plenty of days.
Wash is for when it is actually needed, which is fewer days than the bottle size implies.
Head-to-toe formulas
A single product for hair and body is genuinely convenient and perfectly adequate. Separate shampoo becomes useful when there is enough hair to need it.
Until then the extra bottle is storage, not benefit.
Ointment and balm
A thicker healing ointment is for the specific dry or sore patch, not for the whole body. Applied everywhere it traps more than it soothes.
Keep the balm for the nappy area and any rough patches, and moisturise elsewhere.
Powder
Dusting powder has a narrow role in keeping a fold dry. Apply it to your hand rather than shaking it near the baby's face.
Talc-free formulations are the standard now and are what we carry.
Patch testing
A new product on a small area, then a day's wait, will save you a whole-body reaction. This matters most with anything scented or medicated.
If skin is generally reactive, do this every time regardless of the claims on the front.
